Ending HIV in Native Communities

Resiliency and Action is an HIV/AIDS community based educational program that centers Native communities. With traditional knowledge and teachings we provide lessons on HIV/STI prevention, including "HIV 101" and "STI 101" sessions for Native communities aimed at increasing awareness, reducing stigma, and providing sex positive education.

Through community engagement and advocacy we encourage HIV education, testing, prevention, and treatment among Native communities. Our youth and staff attend community events, host community gatherings, youth workshops, distribute condoms and provide peer to peer leadership development.

Native Community Awareness Night

Youth led community education night brings together Native families in Rural California in honor of World AIDS Day.

Our team provided HIV 101 education, interative activities, food and space for sharing stories with elders and youth.

Self HIV testing kits were provided along with safer sex supplies, HIV information and swag.

Advancing HIV/AIDS Education and Treatment

NSWHN project was thrilled to have 3 project PaTHwAY team members complete the ARTAS training on February 14th –February 15th, 2018 in Sacramento CA. This was very exciting! Two of the participants were young people between the ages of 20-24 and directly from the community we serve in Shasta County. This training will help our team better serve our HIV community and connecting them with accessing treatment.

Community PROMISE Training

Community PROMISE (People Reaching Out and Modeling Intervention Strategies) Training in partnership with California Rural Indian Health Board, Project PaTHwAY.

NSWHN team leaders were trained to enhance community awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDS through the following components of the Community PROMISE curriculum:

  • Educate participants about HIV transmission and prevention methods.

  • Promote regular HIV testing and counseling services.

  • Encourage open discussions about sexual health and safe practices.

  • Provide resources for accessing treatment and support services.

  • Foster community engagement through workshops and outreach programs.

  • Involve local leaders to advocate for stigma reduction and support.

Our team implemeted this training into community role model stories that focus on encouraging and modeling norms and behaviors relevant for high-risk individuals to consider accessing and engaging biomedical approaches for HIV prevention.
